A long-standing dispute over unpaid money has allegedly culminated in the brutal killing of a young man in Munshiganj municipality, prompting widespread concern and tension in the locality.
The deceased has been identified as Md Arif Bepari, aged 32. His body was recovered early on Sunday morning from the Jasimnagar area under the municipal jurisdiction of Munshiganj. According to police and local sources, Arif was working as an assistant butcher at the Munshirhat market and lived in a rented house in the Jasimnagar neighbourhood.
Family members state that the incident stems from an unresolved financial dispute involving approximately BDT 49,000 linked to meat trading transactions. The disagreement reportedly involved Arif’s younger brother, Akash Bepari, and a local butcher named Nur Mohammad. The dispute had persisted for several months and had previously been the subject of a written complaint lodged at Munshiganj Sadar Police Station around six months ago.
Tensions escalated on Saturday morning when Akash allegedly detained Nur Mohammad from a roadside area and brought him to the Munshirhat market. He was later handed over to a local butcher association for arbitration. However, shortly afterwards, Enayet Hossain of the Juginighat area, along with several associates, arrived at the market and attempted to secure Nur Mohammad’s release. The situation quickly deteriorated into a heated confrontation, which then reportedly turned violent.
Relatives of the deceased claim that during the altercation, Enayet Hossain and his associates issued threats against both Arif and his brother. Following this incident, the situation in the area remained tense. By Sunday morning, Arif’s body was discovered beside a plot of land in Jasimnagar by local women, bearing visible injuries consistent with a sharp weapon attack.
Law enforcement officials subsequently visited the scene, recovered the body, and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway, with efforts continuing to identify and apprehend those involved.
Authorities have indicated that preliminary findings suggest the killing may have been triggered by the long-standing financial dispute and associated personal enmity. However, they emphasised that the exact motive will only be confirmed after a full investigation.
Attempts to contact the main accused, Enayet Hossain, were unsuccessful as his mobile phone was found switched off.
The incident has triggered panic among residents, with heightened tensions reported in the surrounding areas. Additional police vigilance has been deployed to maintain public order.
