The death of a 23-year-old newlywed woman in Gopalpur upazila of Tangail has sparked widespread concern and raised fresh questions about the circumstances surrounding her marriage and subsequent treatment by her husband’s family. The woman, who reportedly married her long-time partner after staging a five-day hunger strike to secure the union, was found hanging at her husband’s home just three months after the wedding.
Police recovered the body of Monia Munni on Wednesday morning from her husband’s residence in Fulbari village under Hemnagar Union. Officers later completed the inquest and sent the body for a post-mortem examination. Investigators said the autopsy findings will play a crucial role in determining the exact cause and manner of her death.
Monia Munni was the daughter of Manju Mia of Bhuinyabari in Fulbari Madhyapara. She married Jihad Bhuiya, the son of Lal Mia, who also lives in the same village.
According to local residents and members of both families, the couple had been in a long-term romantic relationship. Disagreements over marriage reportedly led Munni to go to Jihad’s family home, where she remained on a hunger strike for five consecutive days in an effort to secure acceptance of the relationship. The incident drew significant public attention within the community.
Following mediation by local community leaders and respected residents, the couple were married on 30 April with a dower amount of Tk 900,000. The marriage was widely viewed as a resolution to the dispute that had generated considerable discussion in the area.
The relationship, however, had already been surrounded by controversy before the wedding took place. Munni’s mother, Rina Begum, had previously submitted a written complaint to the Hemnagar Investigation Centre, alleging that her daughter’s pregnancy had been terminated. She also appealed to the authorities to ensure her daughter’s safety, expressing concerns about her well-being. The matter reportedly became the subject of local discussions before community mediation eventually led to the marriage with the consent of both families.
Relatives of the deceased now claim that the marriage failed to bring stability or security. They allege that Munni was subjected to repeated physical and psychological abuse by her husband and members of his family. According to her relatives, she frequently lived under severe emotional pressure and distress after the marriage.
The family has rejected the possibility that her death was a straightforward or natural incident, insisting that a comprehensive and impartial investigation is needed. They have called on law enforcement authorities to identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought before the courts.
The circumstances following the discovery of the body have added to public speculation. Local residents said that when news of Munni’s death spread on Wednesday morning, neither her husband nor any other members of his family were present at the house. According to neighbours, they had reportedly left the residence before police arrived. Their absence has intensified local curiosity and concern, although investigators have not publicly commented on its significance.
Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin of Gopalpur Police Station said police responded immediately after receiving information about the incident. After completing the necessary legal formalities at the scene, officers sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
He stated that investigators would determine the actual cause of death based on the autopsy report, physical evidence collected from the scene and witness statements. If the investigation uncovers evidence of any criminal offence, legal action will be taken against those found responsible in accordance with the law.
Law enforcement officials have also emphasised that in every case of an unnatural death, forensic findings, material evidence and witness testimony are essential to establishing the facts. They cautioned against drawing premature conclusions before the investigation is complete, adding that every aspect of the incident is being examined carefully. Police said further legal steps will depend on the evidence obtained as the investigation progresses.
