DUCSU Leaders Pledge Judicial Accountability Following Shahbagh Assault

In a resolute address concerning judicial accountability, Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad, the Literary and Cultural Secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), has issued a stern warning to those responsible for the recent assault on student representatives. Speaking at the Vice-Chancellor’s office at Dhaka University on Sunday, 26 April 2026, he asserted that every member of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) involved in the violence would be brought to justice, regardless of how much time passes.

The incident occurred within the precincts of the Shahbagh Police Station in the capital, where DUCSU leaders were reportedly targeted and physically assaulted. The event has generated significant friction across the university campus, prompting formal calls for an exhaustive investigation into the conduct of the political activists implicated.

Origin of the Conflict and Incident Details

The violence originated from a dispute involving social media content. Offensive posts concerning the Prime Minister, the Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, and his daughter, Zaima Rahman, had been disseminated on Facebook.

In an attempt to address the situation, Abdullah Al Mahmud, a DUCSU candidate representing the Shibir-affiliated panel, arrived at Shahbagh Police Station to file a General Diary (GD), claiming the screenshots were fraudulent fabrications intended to provoke unrest. DUCSU leaders A.B. Zubair and Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad subsequently arrived at the station to assist with the legal formalities. It was during this time that the leaders were subjected to a physical attack, allegedly perpetrated by members of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal who were present at the scene.

Assertions on Justice and Long-term Accountability

While addressing university officials and the press, Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad underscored that the pursuit of legal redress would remain a permanent priority. He vowed that those who orchestrated, incited, or physically carried out the assault would eventually face the court of law.

“We will ensure your trial through the passage of time; this is a certainty. Whether it occurs today or fifty years from now, every individual involved in this attack—those who provoked it and those who planned it—will be held accountable.”

He further noted that although the assailants did not succeed in inflicting life-threatening injuries, the ideological resolve of the student union remains unshaken. He suggested that even if the current leaders were incapacitated, their message and the demand for justice would be sustained by future generations of students.

Critique of Political Solidarity and ‘Moral Courage’

Musaddiq also used the platform to critique the broader political environment and the perceived absence of support from various factions. He highlighted that DUCSU leaders had historically been the first to voice opposition when other political figures or members of the “July Power” movement were attacked in districts such as Gazipur.

He expressed profound disappointment that many who had benefited from DUCSU’s advocacy failed to show the “moral courage” to even issue a social media statement in protest of the Shahbagh incident. He cautioned that the “jubilation” displayed by the attackers following the assault would be short-lived as legal processes commenced.

Current Investigation and Institutional Response

The Dhaka University administration has been officially apprised of the incident. There is a growing expectation for a rigorous inquiry into how a violent breach of security occurred within a police station. DUCSU leadership has reiterated that their struggle for justice is intended for the benefit of the entire student body, irrespective of the level of external political support they receive.

As of Sunday evening, neither the Dhaka Metropolitan Police nor university authorities have released a comprehensive list of identified suspects. However, the rhetoric from DUCSU suggests that they will continue to exert departmental and legal pressure until formal charges are filed against the alleged JCD assailants. The situation remains a focal point for student politics in the capital as the university community awaits further institutional action.
