A man has been arrested on charges of extortion after allegedly visiting a Hindu locality in Bogura Sadar, taking money in the name of arranging old-age allowance cards and seeking promises to vote for the scales symbol in the next election.
The arrested person is Md Moksed Ali, a resident of Islampur Harigari Uttar Para in Fapore Union of Bogura Sadar.
According to local sources, on Saturday (6 December) at noon, residents detained Moksed and questioned him after learning of his activities. As the situation escalated and disorder threatened, police from Bogura Sadar police station took him into custody. The incident has generated significant local attention.
Residents said that a few days earlier, Jamaat activist Moksed went to the Belail Hindu neighbourhood and collected photographs and voter ID cards from elderly people and widows, promising to arrange government allowance benefits. He allegedly took Tk 500 from each person for what he described as online processing work.
At the time of collecting money, he is also accused of persuading voters in the Hindu area to cast their votes for Jamaat’s election symbol, the scales.
After the matter became known, Moksed returned to the area around noon on Saturday with a local elder. When residents gathered around him, he returned several copies of online applications.
As the incident unfolded, many people began recording videos, which were later circulated on social media.
Journalists attempted several times to contact the Officer-in-Charge of Bogura Sadar police station but received no response. Later, the police media chief confirmed that Moksed had been arrested, referring to him as a tout.
Since the incident, information suggests that a section has been attempting to secure Moksed’s release from the police station and to suppress the matter.
Meanwhile, Bogura district Jamaat Secretary A Malek said that Moksed is not affiliated with Jamaat.
