The chicken, named Saturday, is approaching its first birthday and was acquired from a farm in Prince George, British Columbia. Professor Kong explains, “When I feel down, it sits beside me and observes me. Perhaps it is trying to understand my emotions, even silently asking why I am sad. This connection is incredibly meaningful to me.”
Even when travelling into the city, Professor Kong brings Saturday along, employing a specially designed diaper to ensure the chicken’s comfort and hygiene.

Professor Kong is conducting an online survey at the University of Northern British Columbia, examining how pets influence the social and emotional development of adolescents. This research is part of an international collaboration, conducted alongside Assistant Professor Tracy Wong at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

They often jokingly ask, “Are you planning to eat the chicken?” Professor Kong takes these remarks in stride, reassuring them, “I would never do that. It is my pet. It is simply a matter of cultural difference and humour.”
