A rickshaw puller was found dead in a blood-stained condition in Meherpur following an alleged attack linked to a long-running dispute over a boundary wall. The incident, according to family members, took place on Tuesday evening in the Sheikhpara area of Meherpur municipal town.
The deceased has been identified as Golam Hossain, aged 46, son of Yasin Ali of the same locality. The accused, named as Samirul Islam, is reported to be Golam Hossain’s maternal cousin.
Police and family sources stated that the dispute originated on 2 May, when Golam Hossain, while returning home with his rickshaw, inadvertently caused damage to a portion of a boundary wall belonging to neighbour Banna Khatun. This incident led to an initial verbal altercation between the parties. Golam Hossain later repaired the damaged section of the wall at his own initiative. However, tensions persisted, particularly over the installation of a tin gate, which became a renewed point of disagreement between the families.
Eyewitness accounts and relatives reported that on Tuesday afternoon, Golam Hossain was preparing to leave his residence with his rickshaw when Banna Khatun allegedly stopped him on the road and insisted that he resolve the issue relating to the gate. At one stage, she reportedly locked his rickshaw and contacted Samirul Islam by mobile phone, requesting his presence at the scene.
Upon receiving the call, Samirul Islam arrived at the location carrying a traditional cutting weapon locally referred to as a “hanshua”. He reportedly sided with Banna Khatun and became engaged in an argument with Golam Hossain. The confrontation escalated rapidly, and Samirul allegedly attacked Golam Hossain with repeated strikes from the weapon.
At the time of the attack, Golam Hossain’s wife, Aleya Khatun, along with local residents, rushed to the scene in an attempt to intervene. Following the intervention, the accused fled the location.
Golam Hossain was immediately rescued in a seriously injured condition and taken to Meherpur General Hospital. On arrival, attending medical staff declared him dead.
Police confirmed that the accused Samirul Islam has fled and remains at large. Meherpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir stated that efforts are underway to arrest him and that legal proceedings are being prepared. The body of the deceased has been kept at the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
