A fatal road accident in the Shani Akhra area of Jatrabari, in the capital, claimed the life of a 25-year-old transport worker, Sajjad Sakib, in the early hours of Sunday night. The incident, which occurred at approximately 1:00 am, has sparked renewed concern among local residents over road safety and traffic management in the busy metropolitan corridor.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, Sajjad Sakib, a resident of Al Amin Road in Konapara under Demra, was attempting to cross the road when he was struck by a speeding truck. The impact was severe, throwing him onto the roadway and leaving him critically injured. Bystanders immediately rushed to his aid and transported him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Medical personnel confirmed that his condition upon arrival was extremely critical. Despite emergency interventions and necessary examinations, he was declared dead at approximately 1:30 am.
The deceased was the only earning member of his family and had been working in the transport sector for an extended period to support his household. His sudden and tragic death has cast a deep shadow of grief over his family, particularly his father, Abdus Salam, and the wider community.
Police from Jatrabari Police Station have confirmed that the truck involved in the incident has been seized. However, the driver managed to flee the scene immediately after the collision and remains at large. Law enforcement authorities have stated that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the driver as soon as possible.
The body has been kept at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Officials noted that the autopsy report will provide further clarity regarding the exact medical cause of death and assist in ongoing investigations.
The incident has once again highlighted longstanding concerns about road safety in Dhaka’s high-traffic areas, particularly during late-night hours when heavy vehicles often operate at high speed. Local residents and commuters have called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, enhanced monitoring of speeding vehicles, and improved pedestrian safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
