Father Remanded in Custody Following Fatal Assault on Seven-Month-Old Infant

A Dhaka court has granted a three-day police remand for a rickshaw puller accused of murdering his seven-month-old daughter by slamming her onto a street during a domestic dispute in the capital’s Uttara area.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain issued the remand order on Sunday after police produced the suspect, Kabir Islam, before the court and requested custody for further interrogation.

Domestic Violence and Tragic Assault

According to the case records, Kabir married Lima Akhtar two years ago, and the couple subsequently had a daughter, Rafa Moni Kobita. Kabir earned a living driving a rickshaw in Dhaka, but suffered from long-standing drug addiction. He frequently subjected his wife to verbal abuse and physical violence while under the influence of narcotics.

The fatal incident unfolded on the evening of 15th July in the Siraj Market area near the Balurmath Harun Mollar Slum in Uttara. Lima had visited her father’s home in the slum along with her infant daughter to care for her ailing father.

At around 7:00 pm, an argument broke out between Kabir and Lima over domestic matters. As the quarrel escalated, an enraged Kabir forcibly snatched seven-month-old Rafa Moni from the arms of her maternal grandmother, raised the infant above his head, and slammed her violently onto the concrete road.

Local residents immediately intervened, detaining Kabir at the scene before handing him over to the police. Bystanders and family members rushed the critically injured child to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment.

Legal Proceedings and Remand Order

Turag Police Station initially arrested Kabir under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and produced him in court the following day, where a magistrate ordered him to be held in judicial custody.

Despite intensive medical care, young Rafa Moni succumbed to her severe traumatic injuries at the hospital on the afternoon of 16th July.

Following the infant’s death, her maternal grandmother, Sharmin Akhtar, filed a formal murder case against Kabir at Turag Police Station on 17th July. Investigators subsequently placed Kabir under formal arrest in connection with the murder charge.

Officers handling the case applied for a multi-day remand to question the accused about his history of substance abuse and the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault. Upon reviewing the police petition, Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted a three-day remand period to facilitate the ongoing homicide investigation.
