Woman Found Dead in Keraniganj as Police Launch Homicide Inquiry

Police have recovered the body of a 30-year-old woman, identified as Momtaz, from an open plot of land adjacent to her residence in the Kholamora neighbourhood of Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Officers retrieved the body on Sunday morning and dispatched it to the morgue at Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.

Gruesome Discovery and Crime Scene Evidence

According to police officers and local residents, Momtaz lived as a tenant in a house owned by one Jalal Miah, situated in a lane near the Kholamora Tiles Mosque. The grim discovery occurred early on Sunday when neighbours spotted a body wrapped in a bedsheet lying unattended in an open area next to the building. They alerted the authorities, prompting a swift response from local police.

Initial examinations at the scene revealed clear signs of violence. Law enforcement officials noted bite marks on the victim’s hands, alongside scattered footwear and distinct indicators of a physical struggle near the body. Investigators are treating these findings as crucial physical evidence.

Personal History and Family Background

Details regarding Momtaz’s recent personal life suggest a series of domestic difficulties. A co-tenant named Imran explained that Momtaz had previously resided in the Kholamora Model Town area with her husband. After her husband abandoned her recently, she moved in with her elder sister, Khushi, and brother-in-law, Yunus Miah, in the same locality.

Momtaz reportedly left her apartment on Saturday afternoon and failed to return home, leaving her family desperate for answers until her body was discovered the following morning.

Her stepmother, Shahida Khatun, mentioned that both her elder sister and brother-in-law were visiting their ancestral village at the time of the incident, leaving Momtaz alone in the residence. She added that Momtaz had estranged herself from the family after marrying a younger man against their wishes. That marriage proved short-lived, as her husband deserted her approximately four months ago.

Police Investigation Under Way

The Officer-in-Charge of Keraniganj Model Police Station, Ruhul Quddus, confirmed that law enforcement has launched a comprehensive investigation into the apparent homicide.

Officers are currently awaiting the final post-mortem report from Mitford Hospital to ascertain the exact circumstances and cause of death. Meanwhile, police teams are working to identify and apprehend any suspects involved in the crime, with formal preparations under way to file a murder case with the police station.
