A fatal traffic accident unfolded in the capital on Sunday evening when a passenger bus lost control and crashed into the outer perimeter of Kurmitola General Hospital, killing one person on the spot and injuring several others.
The victim’s identity could not be immediately established by the authorities following the high-impact collision near the hospital’s entrance.
Witnesses reported that the passenger bus was travelling along the busy thoroughfare from the Mohakhali direction towards Uttara before the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle. The bus veered off the main road, crashed through the outer gate area, and slammed directly into the wall of a gas control room situated within the hospital premises.
The force of the collision wrecked the structural wall of the gas control facility and caused severe damage to the front section of the bus.
Tragically, one individual standing near the collision site died instantly from the sheer impact. Bystanders and hospital security personnel acted swiftly to rescue several injured pedestrians and passengers trapped in the immediate aftermath. The casualties were rushed directly into the emergency unit of Kurmitola General Hospital, where medical staff began administering urgent care.
Law enforcement officers from Cantonment Police Station dispatched patrol units to the scene shortly after receiving emergency calls regarding the vehicular crash.
Sub-Inspector Manik, the duty officer at Cantonment Police Station, confirmed that police received notification of the accident within forty minutes of its occurrence:
“We received information regarding the incident shortly after it took place. One fatality has been officially confirmed at the scene, and the body has been transferred to the hospital morgue for procedural steps. Our officers are actively working at the crash site to secure the area and ascertain the exact number of injured individuals.”
Police officers cordoned off the affected area to prevent potential hazards stemming from the damaged gas infrastructure. The bus involved in the crash has been impounded by law enforcement authorities, and efforts are under way to track down the driver and supervisor, who reportedly fled the scene shortly after the impact.
Investigators are currently gathering eyewitness statements and reviewing traffic surveillance footage from the Mohakhali-Kurmitola corridor to determine whether mechanical failure, reckless overtaking, or excessive speed caused the driver to lose control.
