In a significant crackdown, authorities in Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh district recovered fifteen bags of government rice intended for the food assistance programme from a private residence in Char Gorpur, Dhurail Union. The operation took place on Tuesday (17 March) at around 12:30 a.m., confirmed the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO), Jannat.
According to local sources and administrative officials, the rice had been distributed a few days earlier under the government’s food assistance programme in Dhurail Union. Ashraf Uddin, a local resident, reportedly purchased the rice at a lower rate from beneficiaries and stored it at his home for personal use.
The matter came to the attention of authorities through a confidential tip provided by Abu Raihan, the chief coordinator of the Upazila National Coordination Programme. Acting on this information, the UNO visited the site and recovered fifteen 50-kilogram bags of government rice, which had been stored next to fish feed.
At the time of the raid, Ashraf Uddin was not present at the residence, preventing immediate arrest. However, officials confirmed that a case is being prepared against him for illegal purchase and hoarding of government-provided rice.
UNO Jannat stated, “The operation, based on reliable intelligence, confirmed the allegations. Purchasing and hoarding government rice is a punishable offence. Such irregularities will not be tolerated under any circumstances.” She further emphasised that the administration continues to closely monitor all government relief programmes to ensure proper distribution to intended beneficiaries.
