Fire at Petrol Shop in Galachipa Injures One Man

A sudden fire at a petrol shop in Galachipa Municipality of Patuakhali has left one man seriously injured after sustaining burn wounds, prompting a swift emergency response from local residents and fire service teams on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 pm on 7 April in the Shyamlibagh area along the Animal Hospital Road within Galachipa municipal limits. The shop, which reportedly stored and sold petroleum products, caught fire under circumstances that remain unclear, causing panic among nearby residents and business owners.

The injured man has been identified as 42-year-old Suman Gazi, a local resident who was present at the premises at the time of the blaze. According to eyewitness accounts, the fire erupted suddenly inside the shop without prior warning, rapidly spreading within the confined space where highly flammable materials were present.

At the time of the incident, Mr Gazi was reportedly resting at the rear section of the shop. He sustained significant burn injuries before he could escape the flames. Local people immediately rushed to his aid and managed to pull him out of the affected area before the fire intensified further.

Shortly afterwards, members of the public alerted the fire service, and two units from the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence station in Galachipa arrived at the scene. Firefighters worked alongside local residents to bring the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to adjacent shops and residential structures.

After the fire was extinguished, the injured man was transported to Galachipa Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment. Due to the severity of his burn injuries, attending physicians referred him to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care.

Fire service officials confirmed that the incident was contained within a relatively short period, although significant damage had already been done to the shop’s interior and stored goods. However, authorities stated that the exact cause of the fire could not be immediately determined.

Eyewitness and Official Accounts

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with flames quickly engulfing the shop due to the presence of petroleum products. Some locals attempted to douse the fire using available resources before the arrival of professional firefighters, though the intensity of the blaze made early containment difficult.

A station officer from the Galachipa Fire Service and Civil Defence, Kamal Hossain, confirmed that two firefighting units were dispatched immediately after receiving the emergency call. He stated that the teams were able to bring the fire under control and prevent further escalation to nearby establishments.

Mr Hossain further noted that while the immediate threat had been contained, the investigation into the origin of the fire was ongoing. Officials have not ruled out accidental causes, but no definitive conclusion has yet been reached.

Safety Concerns Raised

The incident has once again highlighted safety concerns surrounding the storage and sale of flammable substances in densely populated municipal areas. Locals have called for stricter monitoring of fuel-related businesses and improved fire safety infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Authorities are expected to conduct a full inspection of the site and surrounding establishments in the coming days as part of their standard post-incident procedure. Meanwhile, the injured man remains under medical supervision, with his condition reported as serious due to extensive burn injuries.
