Police in Sudharam Thana, Noakhali, have detained five individuals following an incident in which the district office of the Awami League was forcibly entered, party banners were displayed, and political slogans were raised. The episode, captured in a video that circulated widely on social media, has sparked concern among local authorities and political observers.
The event occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, reportedly led by grassroots members of the Kadir Hanif Union Awami League. Eyewitnesses and video footage show a group of activists breaking the padlock on the main gate before entering the office. Once inside, they raised various party slogans and reportedly congratulated Mohammad Shahjahan, the BNP candidate for the Noakhali-4 constituency, in the recently held national election. District-level senior party leaders were not present during the incident.
According to OC Mohammad Tauhidul Islam of Sudharam Model Police Station, immediate action was taken upon receiving news of the intrusion, resulting in the arrest of five individuals. The detained persons’ details are as follows:
| Name | Age | Location / Village |
|---|---|---|
| Md. Safikul Islam Nazim | 43 | Kadir Hanif Union |
| Md. Kausar Hamid | 38 | Kadir Hanif Union |
| Md. Ziaul Rahman Rasel | 48 | Kadir Hanif Union |
| Md. Abu Saeed | 55 | Kadir Hanif Union |
| Bidyut Ranjan Pal | 49 | Kadir Hanif Union |
OC Tauhidul Islam added that the office has been re-secured with new locks and enhanced security measures. He also noted that no decision has yet been made regarding bail or release of the detained individuals.
In response to the incident, the civic organisation “July Unity” staged a protest march at 5:00 p.m. in Maijdi, the district town. Participants expressed their anger over the office occupation and called on local authorities to take appropriate action.
Political analysts suggest that the reopening of the long-closed Awami League district office may have heightened tensions among local-level activists. They warn that such confrontations could influence the political balance in the region, urging authorities to remain vigilant.
Following the event, police presence in Noakhali town and surrounding areas has been intensified. The local police high command has directed reinforcement of security arrangements to prevent any further clashes or uncontrolled demonstrations.
Overall, the intrusion at the Awami League district office has introduced a fresh wave of political tension in Noakhali, with the behaviour of party activists and the responsiveness of law enforcement likely to have significant implications in the coming days.
