In a shocking incident that has sent ripples of grief and anger through the local community, Helal Uddin, 55, a former leader of the Nationalist Farmers’ Party (NFP) in Kapasia Upazila, Gazipur, succumbed to injuries sustained in a brutal assault. Uddin, a resident of Kotbajalia village in Chandpur Union, had previously served as the organisational secretary of the Kapasia Upazila Farmers’ Party.
According to family members, the attack occurred late on Saturday night while Uddin was returning home. Four to five unidentified assailants reportedly ambushed him, striking his back with locally made weapons and machetes before fleeing the scene. Local residents discovered him in a critical state and rushed him to Kapasia Upazila Health Complex, where he received initial treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced care. Despite medical intervention, doctors declared him dead at 10:00 am on Sunday.
Relatives described Uddin as a dedicated and selfless leader who had devoted much of his life to serving farmers and the wider community. “Helal Uddin was a tireless advocate for the welfare of ordinary people. His violent death is a tragedy for all of us,” they said.
Fakir Iskandar Alam, Secretary of the Gazipur District unit of the NFP, condemned the killing. “This murder is reprehensible. Helal Uddin had worked tirelessly for the rights of farmers and the general populace. It is difficult to separate this act from its political context,” he remarked.
Kapasia police, led by Officer-in-Charge Shaheenur Alam, stated that a dispute had occurred the previous day between the deceased and his nephew over a mobile phone theft. “The matter is under investigation, and legal action will follow based on the findings,” he said. Uddin’s body has been sent to the Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College morgue for autopsy.
The violent attack has left the local population and political circles in mourning, heightening concerns over security and political tensions in the area.
