Four people were shot after celebrations marking Cape Verde’s qualification for the knockout stage of the World Cup descended into violence in the US city of Brockton, Massachusetts, police said.
The incident occurred late on Friday night near the intersection of Main Street and Park Street, where hundreds of members of the city’s large Cape Verdean community had gathered to celebrate their national team’s historic achievement.
Cape Verde secured a place in the knockout rounds after drawing with Saudi Arabia in their final group-stage match, prompting jubilant scenes among supporters both in the island nation and within Cape Verdean communities abroad. In Brockton, which is home to one of the largest Cape Verdean populations in the United States, residents poured onto the streets waving flags, singing and celebrating the team’s progress in the tournament.
According to a report by the American television network ABC, the festivities later escalated into disorder before gunfire erupted, leaving at least four people with gunshot wounds.
The Brockton Police Department said officers received multiple reports of shots being fired shortly before midnight on Friday. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and found several victims requiring medical attention.
All four injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police have not released details about the victims’ identities, ages or the severity of their injuries, and their current medical conditions have not yet been confirmed.
Authorities have also not disclosed what led to the shooting or whether those injured were directly involved in the disturbance. Investigators are working to establish the sequence of events that transformed what began as a celebratory gathering into a violent incident.
Despite an immediate police response, no arrests were made at the scene.
Law enforcement officials have launched a full investigation and are reviewing evidence to identify those responsible. Detectives are expected to examine witness statements, surveillance footage and other available evidence as part of the inquiry.
Brockton has long been recognised as a cultural centre for the Cape Verdean diaspora in the United States. Major sporting achievements by Cape Verde’s national teams often draw large public gatherings, with football serving as a powerful symbol of national pride for the community.
While such celebrations are typically peaceful, large crowds can present significant public safety challenges, particularly when roads become congested or tensions emerge among attendees. Police routinely increase patrols during major public celebrations to help manage traffic and maintain order.
The shooting has cast a shadow over what had been a moment of celebration for Cape Verdean supporters. As investigators continue their work, authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist the investigation.
Police have not yet indicated whether the shooting was targeted or random, nor have they announced any suspects. The investigation remains ongoing as officers seek to determine the motive behind the violence and bring those responsible to justice.
