Two people were killed and three others injured after a CNG-powered autorickshaw collided head-on with a pickup truck carrying poultry in Fulgazi Upazila of Feni on Saturday night, police and local sources said.
The fatal accident occurred at around 8:00 pm in front of the Palli Bidyut (Rural Electrification) Office, adjacent to the Fulgazi Upazila Parishad, a busy stretch of road frequently used by local commuters and commercial vehicles.
The deceased were identified as Wahida Akter Juha, 20, wife of Kazi Azad of South Pathannagar in Chhagalnaiya Upazila, and Mohammad Kawsar, 25, son of Abul Kalam from Daulatpur village in Fulgazi Upazila.
According to local residents, the CNG-powered autorickshaw and the poultry-laden pickup collided head-on with considerable force, leaving several passengers seriously injured. The impact caused extensive damage to the smaller vehicle, prompting bystanders to rush to the scene and begin rescue efforts before emergency services arrived.
The injured were transported to Feni General Hospital, where doctors on duty declared Juha and Kawsar dead upon arrival.
Hospital and local sources said three other people were also injured in the collision. One of them remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment, while the remaining two received primary medical care before leaving the hospital.
Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the injured or the circumstances that led to the collision. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Officer-in-Charge SM Mizanur Rahman of Fulgazi Police Station confirmed that the identities of the two deceased had been established. He said the vehicles involved in the accident would be taken into police custody as part of the investigation and that legal proceedings were underway.
“The identities of both deceased individuals have been confirmed. The vehicles involved in the accident will be brought to the police station, and necessary legal action is being taken,” the police official said.
Road accidents involving CNG-powered autorickshaws and goods-carrying vehicles remain a recurring concern on regional highways and connecting roads across Bangladesh. Such crashes often result in severe casualties because autorickshaws provide limited protection for passengers during high-impact collisions.
Traffic experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of safe driving practices, adherence to speed limits and regular vehicle inspections, particularly on roads shared by passenger vehicles and commercial transport. Police typically examine factors such as vehicle speed, road conditions, driver conduct and mechanical fitness when investigating fatal road crashes.
Authorities are expected to continue their investigation to determine the precise circumstances surrounding Saturday night’s collision. Meanwhile, the deaths of the two victims have cast a shadow over their families and local communities, while one injured survivor continues to fight for recovery in hospital.
