In Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila, in the Chandora area, more than one hundred garment workers reportedly fell ill after consuming drinking water at a garment manufacturing facility. The incident occurred on Thursday morning at a factory named Dressmen Limited. Affected workers have been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex, alongside various other hospitals and private clinics.
According to information provided by workers and factory authorities, employees consumed water supplied by the factory shortly after reporting for duty in the morning. Within a short period, a significant number of workers began experiencing symptoms including vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, weakness, and breathing difficulties. As the number of affected individuals increased rapidly, panic spread throughout the factory premises.
Factory management subsequently arranged for the transportation and admission of the ill workers to the Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex and several other medical facilities for treatment.
Some of the affected workers alleged that the supplied water had an unpleasant odour. They further stated that they felt unwell shortly after drinking it, and the number of affected individuals gradually rose to more than one hundred.
However, the Assistant General Manager (Administration) of Dressmen Limited, Atikul Islam, stated that 40–50 workers had fallen ill so far. He added that medical treatment was arranged immediately after the incident was reported. He also suggested a possible cause linked to environmental conditions, stating that following continuous “rape” after Monday, waterlogging developed in surrounding areas, and workers consumed tap water that had been affected. He further said that no problems were found in the factory’s water supply.
In response to the incident, the Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakair Police Station, Shahidul Islam, confirmed that police were dispatched to the factory after reports of workers becoming ill from drinking water. He also stated that arrangements were made for medical treatment and that, according to doctors, the affected workers were currently out of danger.
