Police in Sirajganj have arrested a man in connection with the alleged killing of his girlfriend, following an investigation that authorities say moved swiftly from the discovery of the body to the suspect’s detention. The arrest was confirmed at a press briefing on Monday, where senior police officials outlined the circumstances surrounding the case.
The accused, identified as Sohel Rana, 35, hails from Gunerganti village under Sirajganj Sadar upazila. The victim, Mosammat Mariam Begum, 48, was a resident of Khoksabari in the same district. According to police, the two had been in a personal relationship for several years, a fact corroborated by preliminary inquiries and statements from people familiar with them.
The body of the victim was found in a banana plantation in the Kashiahata area, after local residents alerted the authorities. Police have stated that the woman showed signs of violent assault. In keeping with investigative protocol, further details regarding injuries have not been elaborated upon publicly. The body was sent for post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death and to gather forensic evidence.
At the briefing, Additional Superintendent of Police Najran Rauf said that investigators believe the incident stemmed from a disagreement between the couple. According to initial findings, Sohel Rana had been pressing for marriage, while Mariam Begum reportedly wanted more time before making such a decision. This difference, police suspect, led to escalating tensions in the relationship.
Investigators have placed the time of the killing on 5 December. Following the recovery of the body, law enforcement agencies launched an intensive operation, employing technological tools and intelligence-led methods to trace the suspect’s movements. As a result, Sohel Rana was arrested within eight hours of the incident being reported to police.
