A tragic accident in the Narail district claimed the life of a 60-year-old man after he was struck by a moving train while returning home after dropping his grandson at school. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning (7 April) in the Purbachar Kalna area of Lohagara upazila.
The deceased, identified as Akram Mollah, was the son of the late Khaleq Mollah and a resident of the Char Bokjurhi village under Lohagara upazila. According to police and local sources, Mr Mollah had left home earlier in the morning with his grandson, Mahim Mollah, to drop him at Char Jungle Mukundapur Government Primary School, which lies on the opposite side of a railway line.
After successfully escorting the child to school, he began his journey back home. The school is located roughly one and a half kilometres from his residence. On his return, while attempting to cross the railway line at Char Kalna area, he was struck by the Jahannabad Express, a Dhaka-bound train that had departed from Khulna. The impact of the collision was fatal, and he died at the scene.
Local residents reported that although an underpass exists for crossing the railway line safely, it is situated at a considerable distance from the school. This often leads pedestrians to take the risky shortcut of crossing the tracks directly, particularly when in a hurry.
Police from Lohagara Police Station arrived shortly after receiving information about the incident. Officers recovered the body from the railway track and secured the area. Authorities also informed the railway police, as the incident occurred on railway property, and further legal procedures are expected to be handled by them.
An officer from Lohagara Police Station, Sub-Inspector Azizul Talukder, confirmed the recovery of the dismembered body and stated that necessary steps had been taken in coordination with railway authorities.
