A fatal road traffic collision in Uzirpur upazila of Barishal has claimed the lives of a grandmother and her seven-year-old granddaughter after they were struck by a passenger bus on the Dhaka–Barishal highway.
The incident occurred on Tuesday (5 May) at approximately 12:30 pm near the Joyshree Bus Stand area. The deceased have been identified as Roksana Yasmin (65), wife of the late Pannu Kazi from West Joyshree village under the upazila, and her granddaughter Arfa Akter (7).
According to information provided by local residents and police, a Dhaka-bound Hanif Paribahan bus, bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-B-12-3671, hit the two pedestrians while travelling along the highway. Witness accounts and initial reports indicate that the vehicle was moving at high speed and in a reportedly reckless manner at the time of the incident as the pedestrians were attempting to cross the road.
Following the collision, both victims sustained critical injuries. Local people immediately rushed to the scene and transported them to Uzirpur Upazila Health Complex. On arrival, attending medical officers declared both Roksana Yasmin and Arfa Akter dead.
It has been confirmed that Arfa Akter was a student of West Joyshree Government Primary School. She had reportedly been returning home after completing her classes when the accident occurred. Her father, Rubel Kazi, is currently working abroad in Malaysia.
Police from the Gournadi Highway Police Station stated that they have not yet received a written complaint from the victim’s family regarding the incident. Officer-in-Charge Mohsin Hossain noted that necessary legal steps will be taken in accordance with the law once a formal complaint is lodged.
The collision has once again drawn attention to safety concerns along the Dhaka–Barishal highway, particularly in areas where pedestrian movement intersects with high-speed vehicular traffic near local bus stands.
