Independent Candidate Promises Marriage Support in Thakurgaon

In a striking departure from conventional political campaigning, independent candidate Asha Mani of Thakurgaon-3 has gone viral on social media for promising voters assistance with marriage arrangements rather than the usual development projects or political pledges.

During a public outreach programme on Wednesday (28 January) in Nekmord area of Ranisankail Upazila, Asha Mani addressed local voters directly: “Many young voters have approached me, asking, ‘Sister, please help arrange our marriages.’ I told them to simply vote for me. If I am elected, I will ensure that these marriages are conducted safely and with ease.”

Her promise extends beyond young voters. She has appealed to middle-aged and elderly constituents as well, offering each a symbolic “marriage gift” in exchange for their vote. Locals have interpreted this initiative as an innovative attempt to empower women and strengthen social bonds within the community.

The unconventional pledge has sparked widespread amusement and discussion online. One netizen, Joydeb Debnath, commented humorously: “Some promise paradise, some offer family cards, but Asha Mani wants to provide husbands or wives!” Despite the light-hearted reactions, the sentiment has generated significant attention and discussion across social media platforms.

Local social worker Ambia Khatun praised Asha Mani, stating, “Regardless of the election outcome, she is a courageous woman who tirelessly works for empowerment and the assertion of rights.”

Previously, Asha Mani contested in local government elections but was unsuccessful due to limited votes. This time, she is contesting as an independent candidate for the national parliament, positioning herself as a formidable contender in Thakurgaon-3.

Thakurgaon district will see a total of ten candidates competing in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election. Notably, female candidates are contesting in only two constituencies, highlighting the limited representation of women in local politics. Asha Mani’s innovative pledge, coupled with her social service-oriented approach, has distinguished her from other candidates in the race.
