India and Sri Lanka Make Last-Minute World Cup Changes

On the eve of the ICC T20 World Cup, both India and Sri Lanka have suffered significant setbacks, forcing late alterations to their squads. Indian all-rounder Harshit Rana and Sri Lankan pacer Ishan Malinga have been ruled out of the tournament due to serious injuries, leaving both teams scrambling to maintain balance ahead of crucial matches.

Rana sustained a knee injury during India’s preparatory match against South Africa in Mumbai. Having bowled just a single over, he was forced to leave the field, and was later seen with a heavily bandaged knee. India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav stated, “The physios are examining him, but the signs are not promising. It doesn’t look encouraging at the moment.” The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) subsequently confirmed that Rana would not feature in the World Cup.

Replacing him is experienced pacer Mohammed Siraj, who has claimed 14 wickets in 16 T20 internationals at an economy rate of 7.79. While Siraj’s international T20 experience is limited, he is a proven force in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL), having taken 183 wickets in 160 IPL matches at an economy of 8.25. Rana’s absence will also impact India’s lower-order batting, where he recently scored a half-century in the New Zealand series. India will open their World Cup campaign against the United States today.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s pace spearhead Ishan Malinga suffered a shoulder injury during the second T20 home match against England. His replacement, Promod Madushan, earned his spot in the national squad following an impressive IPL 2025 season. Madushan has taken 12 wickets in eight T20 internationals at an economy rate of 8.63. Sri Lanka will kick off their World Cup journey on 8 February against Ireland in Colombo, competing in Group B alongside Oman, Australia, and Zimbabwe.

Both teams will rely heavily on the experience of Siraj and Madushan to stabilise their line-ups and preserve squad balance. These last-minute changes test not only the adaptability of the squads but also their resilience in a highly competitive tournament where every match is critical.
