The Government of Bangladesh has formalised a comprehensive plan to upgrade the existing aviation infrastructure in Bogra into a full-scale international airport. This ambitious project includes the establishment of a state-of-the-art airbase and a dedicated flying academy designed to cultivate a new generation of skilled pilots. The announcement followed a high-level site inspection on Thursday afternoon, where a delegation evaluated the feasibility of commencing commercial flight operations.

High-Level Inspection and Government Commitments
The delegation was led by the Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, Afroza Khanam Rita. She was accompanied by several key officials, including:
Rashiduzzaman Millat, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism.
Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives.
Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan, Chief of Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force.
Rezaul Karim Badsha, Member of Parliament (Bogra-6).
Mosharraf Hossain, Member of Parliament (Bogra-4).
During the briefing, Minister Afroza Khanam Rita referenced a prior directive from the Prime Minister, noting that the development of Bogra International Airport is a priority for the northern region. She emphasised that the facility would not only serve as a transport hub but also as a training centre. “We require a significant number of skilled pilots,” she stated, confirming that the flying academy would provide professional training to meet national demands.
Technical Expansion and Strategic Importance
The State Minister for Local Government, Mir Shahe Alam, clarified the administrative progress of the project. He noted that following a public announcement by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Altafunnessa playground, a formal executive order (Anushashan) was issued by the Prime Minister’s Office. Consequently, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has officially commenced the necessary technical and administrative workflows.
A critical component of the upgrade involves the expansion of the current runway. To accommodate international commercial and cargo aircraft, a decision has been reached to construct an additional 10,500 square feet of runway space.
Summary of Project Components
| Feature | Description |
| Airport Status | Upgrade to International Standard |
| Runway Expansion | 10,500 square feet of new construction |
| Military Utility | First advanced airbase in Northern Bangladesh |
| Educational Facility | Flying Academy for military and civil pilots |
| Logistics | Dedicated cargo facilities for regional exports |
| Economic Impact | Boost to light engineering and agricultural sectors |
Economic and Regional Impact
The transformation of the Bogra airfield is expected to yield significant socio-economic benefits for the northern districts. Currently, the site serves as a training school for the Bangladesh Air Force. The Chief of Air Staff confirmed that the location will now host the region’s first sophisticated airbase.
Beyond military and passenger utility, the inclusion of cargo facilities is a strategic move for the local economy. Bogra is a known hub for the production of agricultural goods, agricultural machinery, and light engineering products. The international airport will facilitate the direct export of these goods to global markets, bypassing the logistical hurdles of ground transport to Dhaka. Officials anticipate that the convergence of an international airport, cargo hubs, and training academies will trigger a surge in investment and employment opportunities across the northern region.
