Baul Artist Issues Public Apology

Bangladeshi Baul artist Hasina Sarkar has issued a public apology following widespread controversy over her recent comments regarding the country’s folk music community. The remarks, which circulated on social media and sparked debate, involved allegations concerning professional opportunities and inappropriate pressures faced by female Baul performers.

In earlier statements, Sarkar had suggested that some female Baul artists are sometimes subjected to unwanted propositions and that, in certain cases, securing stage performances may depend on personal connections rather than artistic merit. The comments quickly went viral, drawing both criticism and support from different sections of the cultural community.

In a newly released video message, Sarkar expressed regret over her words and apologised directly to fellow performers. She stated that she did not intend to offend any member of the Baul fraternity and asked for forgiveness from all artists within the tradition. She also appealed to the public and colleagues to continue supporting her work as before.

During the video, she further alleged that she had recently faced professional setbacks. According to her, a group of individuals reportedly shut down one of her offices in the Mirpur area. She also claimed that her stage name, “Hasina Sarkar,” had occasionally led to her being removed from programmes or replaced despite prior invitations.

Sarkar explained that her earlier comments were made in a moment of frustration. She admitted that emotional distress had influenced her language and clarified that her statements regarding performance opportunities were not intended to generalise the entire industry.

She also highlighted broader concerns within the folk music scene, suggesting that less experienced performers sometimes receive opportunities over more established Baul artists. However, she reiterated that if her remarks had caused any offence or misunderstanding, she deeply regretted them.
