Jamaat Leader Embezzles Deceased Teacher’s Salary for Two Decades

A shocking incident of identity theft and financial fraud has surfaced in Bhola’s Tazumuddin Upazila, where a local political figure is accused of embezzling a deceased teacher’s salary for twenty years. Md. Mohiuddin, who serves as an office assistant at Tazumuddin Degree College and holds the position of Upazila Jamaat Secretary, allegedly exploited a namesake to siphon off government funds continuously.

The victim of this posthumous identity theft was a junior teacher, also named Md. Mohiuddin, who was employed at the Mohammad Vela Omaria Islamia Dakhil Madrasa. According to institutional records, the deceased teacher was initially appointed to his post on the 13th of March 1994. Following his untimely death, the position naturally fell vacant. However, taking advantage of their shared name, the accused manipulated the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) system—a government payroll scheme designed for non-government educational institutions—by commandeering the late teacher’s unique index number and associated bank account.

To comprehend the sheer scale of the administrative loophole exploited here, context regarding Bangladesh’s educational recruitment is necessary. In 2005, the government introduced a mandatory teacher registration system to streamline recruitment, enhance transparency, and curb irregularities. Bypassing this crucial regulatory mechanism, the accused Mohiuddin allegedly orchestrated a fraudulent appointment as an assistant teacher at the exact same madrasa on the 7th of September 2006. By concealing the truth and adopting the pre-existing index number of the deceased, he evaded the newly implemented certification requirements and began drawing state allowances illegally. Recent payroll documents, including the MPO copy from June 2026, clearly demonstrate that funds were still being routed to the deceased educator’s bank account.

The massive irregularity finally came to light following the appointment of the current Madrasa Superintendent, Maulana Md. Nuruzzaman. Upon discovering the anomaly during a review of institutional records, the superintendent submitted a formal, written complaint to the Director General of the Madrasa Education Directorate. Nuruzzaman has emphatically demanded a comprehensive investigation and stringent administrative measures.

“The discrepancy caught my attention shortly after I joined,” the superintendent stated. “I have officially petitioned the Director General to resolve this matter fairly and to ensure justice is served. In my estimation, millions of takas belonging to the state have been unethically misappropriated over the past two decades. A meticulous inquiry will uncover the entire truth and facilitate the recovery of the stolen exchequer funds.”

When approached by the press for a comment regarding the allegations, the accused Jamaat leader provided a highly contradictory defence. “Although the account numbers are identical, no salary was withdrawn from that specific account,” he claimed. However, when pressed to disclose the actual account from which he had been drawing his wages for the past twenty years, he abruptly terminated the telephone call.

Addressing the scandal, Rezaul Karim, the Upazila Secondary Education Officer, assured the public that a thorough probe is currently underway. “We are investigating the allegations with the utmost urgency, and a detailed report will be forwarded to the higher authorities very soon,” Karim affirmed. “If the accusations against him are substantiated, robust departmental action will be initiated, which will certainly include the complete recovery of the misappropriated government funds.”
