Jamaat Leaders Arrested Over Post-Election Attack

Two local leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami party have been arrested in Sirajganj’s Ullapara Upazila following an attack and looting at a business owned by a Jubo Dal leader. Ullapara Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Sakil Azam, confirmed the arrests.

The detainees have been identified as:

  • Abdul Alim Sardar, Amir of Udhunia Union Jamaat

  • Abdul Kader Khandakar, Secretary of Udhunia Union Jamaat

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, when Abdul Latif, Joint General Secretary of Udhunia Union Jubo Dal, was targeted at his shop in Gojail Bazar. The attackers allegedly vandalised the property and stole cash and other valuables. Following the attack, Latif filed a case at Ullapara Model Police Station naming 10 to 12 individuals as suspects.

According to case reports, the assault is believed to have been motivated by “old enmities” following the parliamentary election, in which Jamaat-e-Islami’s nominated candidate, Rafiqul Islam Khan, won the Sirajganj-4 seat. While the shop itself was not set ablaze, substantial damage was caused, and cash along with certain valuables were reportedly looted.

OC Sakil Azam stated, “On Saturday evening, police conducted raids across various areas of Udhunia Union, leading to the arrest of the two main perpetrators. They were produced in court on Sunday morning. Law enforcement is maintaining control of the situation, and operations continue to apprehend the remaining suspects.”
