Two residents of Dewanganj upazila in Jamalpur have died after accidentally consuming rat poison tablets, reportedly mistaking them for gastric medicine, according to police and family sources. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Baniapara village under Parramrampur Union, sending shockwaves through the close-knit rural community.
The deceased were identified as Kanku Mia, aged 50, and Md Kamal Mia, aged 48. The two men were related through marriage and were spending time at the same household when the accident occurred. Family members said that both men had complained of stomach discomfort and unknowingly took tablets that were later discovered to be poison intended for killing rats.
Shortly after ingestion, both men began to show signs of severe illness. Alarmed by their rapidly deteriorating condition, relatives rushed them to the Dewanganj Upazila Health Complex for emergency treatment. Medical staff there provided initial care but, as their condition worsened, doctors referred them to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment.
Tragically, one of the men died while being transported to Mymensingh, despite efforts to stabilise him en route. The other succumbed later at the hospital while undergoing treatment. Their deaths have left the village in mourning, with neighbours and relatives expressing deep sorrow over what has been described as a devastating but preventable accident.
Police officials confirmed that the deaths were accidental and resulted from the mistaken consumption of poisonous tablets commonly used in households to control rodents. An officer involved in the case said that no signs of foul play had been found and that the incident underscores the dangers of storing toxic substances without clear labelling or proper separation from medicines.
Local residents noted that in many rural homes, rat poison tablets are often kept within easy reach, sometimes stored alongside everyday household items. Community elders and health workers have since urged villagers to exercise greater caution and to keep all hazardous substances securely stored and clearly marked to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has also renewed calls for stronger public awareness campaigns on poison safety, particularly in rural areas where literacy levels may be lower and access to safe storage solutions limited. Health officials emphasised that even a moment’s confusion can have fatal consequences.
