A wave of tension has gripped Jessore city following the cold-blooded assassination of a local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader on Saturday evening. The victim, identified as Alamgir Hossain, aged 50, was a resident of the Shankarpur district and held the significant position of Joint General Secretary for the BNP’s Ward No. 7 unit. The brazen nature of the attack, conducted in a bustling urban area, has sparked fears of a resurgence in politically motivated killings.
The fatal shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 pm on 3 January 2026. According to accounts provided by the victim’s family, Alamgir was standing on Ishak Road in front of the local councillor’s office, socialising with acquaintances. The evening was shattered when unidentified gunmen approached the group and fired a single, precision shot into the left side of Alamgir’s head. The assailants used the immediate chaos and the evening shadows to make a swift escape from the scene before any bystanders could intervene.

Local residents acted quickly to transport the unconscious and bleeding official to the emergency department of Jessore General Hospital. Dr Bichitra Mallik, the medical officer on duty, reported that the victim arrived in a critical state with a catastrophic cranial injury. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, Alamgir was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The medical report confirmed that the entry wound was situated on the left temple, indicating a deliberate intent to kill.
The victim’s elder brother, Jahangir Hossain, has called for immediate justice, struggling to reconcile the loss of his brother who was simply “sharing stories” with friends moments before the attack. Within the local political circuit, there is a growing suspicion that agents of the previous government may be attempting to incite chaos by targeting active grassroots organisers.
Inspector Mominul Haque of the Jessore Kotwali Police Station confirmed that multiple units have been dispatched to the Shankarpur area to secure evidence and interview witnesses. “We are treating this as a high-priority murder investigation,” the Inspector stated. “Our teams are working to identify the motive and apprehend the culprits who fled into the Ishak Road alleyways.” As the district remains on high alert, the BNP leadership has called for a thorough investigation to ensure the assassination does not trigger a cycle of retaliatory violence.
