Justice Denied: Shariatpur Child Abuse Settled Locally for BDT 1 Lakh

A grave allegation of child abuse has emerged from the Zajira upazila of Shariatpur, sparking widespread outrage across the community. A twelve-year-old child was allegedly violated by a fifty-year-old man named Elias Khan in the Joynagar union. Rather than allowing the legal system to take its proper course, influential local figures and a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader intervened. They orchestrated a local arbitration meeting to sweep the heinous crime under the rug in exchange for a meager financial settlement of BDT 100,000.
According to details provided by the victim’s family, the horrific incident unfolded on a Thursday night at around 8:00 PM. The accused allegedly lured the minor to the second floor of the newly constructed building of the Joynagar Ayetunnesa Government Primary School, where the child was subjected to physical abuse under severe threats and intimidation. Educational institutions are meant to be safe sanctuaries for children, making the occurrence within school grounds particularly distressing for local residents.
As news of the abuse began to spread through the neighbourhood, attempts to suppress the matter commenced immediately. A local Jamaat leader, Maulana Md. Selim, alongside Mannan Shikdar, spearheaded efforts to broker a compromise with the victim’s father. Initially, the father demanded strict justice and refused to back down, causing the proposed settlement to stall. However, persistent pressure from local elites and relatives eventually wore down the grieving family.
A final arbitration meeting was convened on a Wednesday evening at the grounds of the Joynagar Moslem Uddin Khan Degree College. Surrounded by influential village elders and community leaders, the vulnerable father was allegedly coerced into signing a written document agreeing not to pursue legal action in exchange for the financial payout. Speaking to the media, the distressed father revealed his helplessness, stating that he initially demanded proper justice and wanted no part of a monetary settlement, but ultimately buckled under intense social and familial pressure.
Local human rights advocates and conscious citizens have expressed profound indignation over attempts to settle a serious criminal offense through informal financial arbitration. Legal experts emphasize that heinous acts like child abuse cannot legally or morally be resolved through local kangaroo courts or monetary compensation, as such practices undermine the rule of law and embolden perpetrators.
When approached by reporters regarding his role in the controversial arbitration, Maulana Md. Selim attempted to deflect individual responsibility. He claimed that he did not act alone and that various esteemed local personalities had gathered to resolve the issue because Elias Khan is known as a respected figure in the area. Meanwhile, efforts to locate Mannan Shikdar, another key organizer of the Salish, proved unsuccessful as he was not found at his residence.
Law enforcement authorities have responded to the public outcry. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saleh Ahmed of Zajira Police Station confirmed that no formal written complaint had been lodged at the station directly by the family. Nevertheless, upon noticing reports circulating across social media and various channels, police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene. The police administration has assured the public that the allegations are being thoroughly investigated, and strict legal action will be pursued against those found culpable once the inquiry is complete.
