There has been no notable improvement in the health condition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, with her major medical complications still not under control despite repeated examinations, responsible sources have said.
Doctors on the medical board stated that complications related to her diabetes, kidneys, heart and lungs continue to fluctuate. As a result of this instability, she has been kept under round-the-clock close observation for several days.
On Sunday night, a source associated with treatment and travel-related decisions said doctors, after assessing her most recent condition, have postponed her overseas travel by another two days. Taking into account the risks of long-distance travel, the decision now depends on changes in her health over the next 24 to 48 hours. The source added that until Sunday night there were no signs of either improvement or deterioration, with her condition remaining almost unchanged.
According to related sources, members of the medical board held an emergency meeting on Saturday night to review her overall condition. Several medical tests were carried out on Saturday and Sunday following the meeting. Another meeting of the board is scheduled for today, Monday, when the latest test reports will be reviewed to determine whether any adjustments to the treatment plan are required.
Doctors said Khaleda Zia’s condition is being closely monitored, with special focus on fluctuations in diabetes, impaired kidney function and heart complications. Her lung condition is also under regular observation. Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, is involved in the treatment process and has been travelling to and from the hospital daily since returning from London to Dhaka.
Medical sources said the overall situation is not stable, but it has not significantly worsened either. Although no new complications have emerged, the failure to control the main health issues means she needs to remain under intensive monitoring.
A close source from the medical board said that although her diabetes, kidney, heart and lung conditions sometimes remain controlled, they can suddenly worsen, making it difficult to describe her condition as stable. Recent tests have shown some improvement in kidney and lung conditions, but doctors say this is not enough to reduce the overall risk, and she is still not out of danger.
Because of this uncertainty, the proposed date for her foreign travel has been repeatedly revised. Initially, the BNP announced she would be taken to London early Friday (5 December), later changing the date to 7 December, and then to 9 December. That date, however, remains uncertain.
Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital for more than two weeks. Her critical health condition continues to be a matter of concern for people across the country.
