Land Dispute Turns Fatal in Dinajpur

A violent family dispute over ancestral land in northern Bangladesh has left a father and his son dead, with two other sons now on the run, according to police.

The tragic incident occurred at around 6:00 am on Tuesday in the Mondolpara area of Fateganjpur Union under Chirirbandar Upazila in Dinajpur District. Local authorities confirmed that the confrontation stemmed from a long-standing conflict over the division of agricultural property within a polygamous household.

The deceased have been identified as 70-year-old Shahidul Islam Dulu and his 32-year-old son Kabil. Police said both victims were attacked with iron rods during an altercation in a maize field close to their home. Shahidul Islam died at the scene, while Kabil was rushed by locals to a hospital in nearby Saidpur, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

According to police investigations, Shahidul Islam had two wives, and tensions had been escalating for years between the children of the two households over property distribution. The dispute reportedly intensified after the recent harvesting of paddy and the subsequent cultivation of maize on the same land.

Authorities said Shahidul had previously attempted to divide the land equally between the two family groups. However, disagreements resurfaced when the sons from the second wife demanded a larger share of the newly cultivated maize fields.

Police believe the confrontation on Tuesday morning escalated quickly into violence. Two sons from the second wife—identified as 18-year-old Sakeb and 30-year-old Sadiqul—are accused of attacking their father and half-brother before fleeing the scene. Both suspects remain at large.

Law enforcement officials have recovered the alleged weapon used in the attack, an iron rod, from the crime scene. A manhunt has been launched, and legal proceedings are underway.
