In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to national culture, the 2026 Ekushey Padak has been awarded posthumously to the legendary Bangladeshi musician Ayub Bachchu on the occasion of Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day. The award ceremony took place on Thursday, 26 February, at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, where Prime Minister Tarek Rahman personally presented the honour to Bachchu’s family. His wife, Ferdous Akter Chandana, received the medal on his behalf.
Ayub Bachchu is widely regarded as a pioneering figure in Bangladeshi rock music. Beginning his career in the 1970s and continuing until his death in 2018, he opened new horizons in the country’s music industry. Following the award, the official Facebook page of his band LRB issued a statement emphasising the significance of the recognition:
“This state honour is more than ceremonial; it reflects the nation’s profound respect for Ayub Bachchu’s lifelong dedication to music.”
The statement further noted that Bachchu’s creativity and distinctive style have enriched Bangladeshi music on the international stage. By acknowledging an artist of his calibre, the nation simultaneously celebrates the broader musical community. The recognition is expected to serve as an inspiration for aspiring musicians of future generations. His family also expressed hope that, in the years to come, the nation’s highest civilian award, the Swadhinata Padak (Independence Award), may be conferred upon him.
“Although Ayub Bachchu is no longer with us, his melodies, courage, and vision endure. It is this enduring dream that continues to guide and inspire us,” the statement concluded.
