Measles Death Toll Reaches 820 Nationwide

Bangladesh has recorded four more deaths among people showing symptoms consistent with measles over the past 24 hours, although no laboratory-confirmed measles deaths were reported during the same period. The latest figures bring the combined nationwide death toll from confirmed measles cases and suspected measles-related illnesses to 820 since 15 March.

The information was released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in its latest daily update on Sunday. The report covers the 24-hour period from 8:00 a.m. on Saturday to 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.

According to the DGHS, 95 people have died after their infections were confirmed as measles through laboratory testing. A further 725 people have died after exhibiting symptoms associated with the disease, although their infections were not confirmed by laboratory diagnosis. Together, these cases account for the cumulative death toll recorded since mid-March.

The latest fatalities were reported from three administrative divisions. Two of the deaths occurred in the Mymensingh Division, while one death each was recorded in the Dhaka and Barishal divisions. No additional deaths linked to either confirmed or suspected measles cases were reported from the country’s remaining divisions during the reporting period.

The number of new infections also continued to rise. Over the past 24 hours, health authorities confirmed 170 new measles cases through laboratory testing, increasing the total number of confirmed infections recorded this year to 15,442.

At the same time, another 990 people were identified as having symptoms compatible with measles. As a result, the cumulative number of suspected infections has reached 123,753 nationwide, highlighting the continued spread of the disease and the sustained pressure on the country’s public health system.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads primarily through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Young children, particularly those who have not received routine immunisation, are considered the most vulnerable to severe illness and complications. Common symptoms include fever, cough, a runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive skin rash.

The latest figures indicate that while laboratory-confirmed measles deaths have not increased during the past day, transmission of the disease remains active. Health authorities continue to monitor the outbreak through daily surveillance, tracking both confirmed infections and suspected cases to assess its progression across the country.

The steady increase in both confirmed and suspected infections underlines the importance of continued disease surveillance, timely diagnosis, and adherence to routine vaccination schedules as public health officials work to contain the outbreak.
