A 10-month-old infant has died while undergoing treatment with suspected measles symptoms at the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura. The child, identified as Humaira, passed away in the hospital’s isolation ward in the early hours of Wednesday. She was from Sherpur upazila in Bogura district.
Hospital officials reported that the infant had been admitted with classical signs consistent with measles, including high fever, widespread skin rash, and significant physical weakness. Medical staff noted that several other children displaying similar symptoms were also receiving treatment in the same isolation unit, which has been established to reduce the risk of cross-infection among patients.
A spokesperson for the hospital and its deputy director confirmed that out of 10 children admitted with suspected measles symptoms over the past 24 hours, one had died. However, authorities emphasised that it remains unconfirmed whether the child was clinically suffering from measles, as laboratory analysis of blood and other biological samples is still underway. A definitive diagnosis will only be established once the test results are received.
The hospital has introduced a dedicated isolation ward to manage suspected infectious cases. Nevertheless, officials acknowledged significant limitations in critical care capacity. In particular, the absence of a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) has been identified as a major challenge in managing severely ill children. As a result, referrals and advanced treatment options remain constrained. The hospital administration has already communicated its requirement for additional staffing and infrastructure support to the Ministry of Health.
Meanwhile, a similar rise in suspected cases has been observed at the 250-bed Mohammad Ali Hospital in Bogura. Over the last 24 hours, seven patients with measles-like symptoms were treated there, with one child currently admitted. Samples from the admitted patient have been sent to Dhaka for laboratory confirmation.
Health authorities also reported that suspected cases have emerged across multiple upazilas in the district. In the past month alone, samples from 26 individuals across 11 upazila health complexes have been collected and sent for testing. Of these, two cases have been confirmed as measles infections. At present, no new patients are reported to be admitted at the upazila level facilities.
Medical experts warn that measles, a highly contagious viral disease, tends to spread more rapidly in environments with incomplete immunisation coverage, dense population clusters, and seasonal fluctuations that favour respiratory infections. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their underdeveloped immune systems and higher risk of complications such as pneumonia, dehydration, and encephalitis.
