Messi Reflects on Missed Education Opportunities

I had the time, but I didn’t seize it.”

Messi’s childhood was shaped by unique challenges. He battled a growth hormone deficiency and joined Barcelona’s youth academy at a very young age, leaving little room to focus on academics. Yet despite the sacrifices and early hardships, his football career flourished. Looking back, Messi acknowledges that the lack of formal education occasionally leaves him feeling “ignorant” in certain situations. “There are moments when you are with influential people, trying to communicate, and you feel inadequate,” he said. “I think to myself, how foolish I was, how much time I wasted.”

These experiences have shaped the way Messi guides his own children. He encourages them to embrace every opportunity that life offers. “I never lacked anything. My father always tried to give me the best. But my children now have even more opportunities, and I want them to take full advantage,” he explained.

Regarding the upcoming 2026 World Cup, Messi has not confirmed his participation but has expressed a desire to play while managing his fitness carefully. The tournament, held across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, begins on 11 June. Reflecting on Argentina’s 2022 World Cup journey, Messi recalled the group-stage tension against Mexico, which was crucial after a surprising opening loss to Saudi Arabia. “If we hadn’t beaten Mexico, we would have been out. We played with fear, but we had to win. Mexico always tests us,” he said.

Messi also shared his broader life philosophy. “Life must be enjoyed, even when it is difficult. Not everyone faces the same circumstances. Many encounter harsh realities, yet enjoyment should never stop. I now cherish my family, my children, everyday moments—these are my greatest joys. Every day is worth enjoying because tomorrow is uncertain.”

Currently, Messi has begun a new season in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, though the start has been challenging. His team suffered a 3–0 defeat to Los Angeles FC in their opening match.
