Mohammadpur Gate Mugging Incident Leads To Two Arrests

Two suspects have been apprehended by law enforcement agencies following a high-profile robbery targeting two women outside the entrance gate of a residential building in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka. The coordinated operations were executed on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, across different locations in Narayanganj by a joint deployment comprising the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) and the Mohammadpur Thana Police.

The detained individuals have been formally identified by the authorities as Mohammad Jewel and Anwar Hossain.

Coordinated Operations And Material Seizures

Providing details on the police operation, the Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Police for the Mohammadpur Zone, Abdullah Al Mamun, confirmed that a targeted raid was conducted during the afternoon in the Bandar locality of Narayanganj. The operation successfully resulted in the arrest of Anwar Hossain, who is directly accused of participating in the sensational mugging incident.

During the arrest, police personnel seized substantial physical evidence connected to the crime. The confiscated items included two large machetes (chapatis) utilised to threaten the victims, one pickup van deployed by the perpetrators during the offence, three bags belonging to the victims, and a portion of the stolen properties.

Concurrently, Major M. Mubeen Rahman Tapas, the Deputy Director (Media) of RAB-2, announced that the primary suspect in the robbery case, Mohammad Jewel, had also been successfully tracked down and apprehended in Narayanganj. Major Tapas confirmed that the suspect was immediately taken into custody and subjected to active interrogations regarding the wider operations of the criminal ring. Preliminary background verifications conducted by the agency revealed that Jewel has a history of criminal indictments, with multiple existing cases registered against him across various police stations in the capital city.

Sequence Of The Recorded Street Offence

The criminal incident transpired during the early hours of Sunday at approximately 3:00 am along Nurjahan Road in Mohammadpur. The two female victims had recently returned to Dhaka following the conclusion of their Eid-ul-Adha regional holidays. According to official police accounts, the women had travelled via an inter-district bus from the northwestern district of Thakurgaon, disembarking at the Shyamoli bus terminal. From Shyamoli, they hired a cycle rickshaw to transport them and their luggage to their apartment building located on Nurjahan Road.

The entirety of the subsequent armed assault was recorded by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed near the property entrance. The video footage, which was later disseminated across various social media platforms, ignited extensive public discussion and intense criticism regarding urban safety.

The digital recording showed the two women disembarking from the cycle rickshaw and standing directly in front of the main iron gate of their residence, waiting for the security locks to be opened from within to allow them entry. The rickshaw puller remained stationary beside them on the pavement. Within moments, an unidentified individual wielding a large machete aggressively approached the group, closely accompanied by an accomplice. The perpetrators brandished the weapons in close proximity to the victims, using explicit threats of physical violence to subjugate them. Within a very brief duration, the assailants forcibly seized the victims’ luggage, handbags, and other portable valuable items before fleeing the scene.

Legal Proceedings And Investigation Continuity

Following the public emergence of the video evidence and the subsequent filing of a formal complaint, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police combined intelligence resources with the elite crime-busting unit RAB to track the escape route of the suspects. The tracking led investigators outside the administrative boundaries of Dhaka and into Narayanganj district, where the hideouts were breached.

The Mohammadpur Thana Police stated that the retrieved belongings are being processed to be returned to the rightful owners under judicial supervision. Legal proceedings are actively being drawn up against both Mohammad Jewel and Anwar Hossain under the relevant sections of the Penal Code concerning armed robbery and possession of illegal weapons. Law enforcement officials added that further investigations are underway to ascertain if the pickup van seized from the suspects had been involved in previous night-time robberies targeting long-distance commuters within the metropolis.
