Mosaddek Returns to Bangladesh Squad

Four years after his last appearance, all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain has forced his way back into the Bangladesh national setup, reigniting debate over squad balance and selection strategy ahead of the upcoming One Day International series against Australia. The selection panel, led by Habibul Bashar, has recalled him following a sustained run of strong performances in domestic cricket, marking a significant turnaround in his international career trajectory.

At one stage, it appeared that Mosaddek’s path back to the national side was firmly blocked. Former chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain had publicly suggested that as long as Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained a fixture in the team, opportunities for Mosaddek would be limited. Although that remark was later withdrawn with an apology, it reflected a widely held view at the time regarding role overlap within Bangladesh’s all-rounder pool. However, Mosaddek’s consistent performances in domestic competitions have since reshaped that narrative.

The current squad for the Australia series still features Miraz as captain, and questions have naturally emerged about whether both all-rounders can fit into the playing XI simultaneously. The captain, however, has dismissed any suggestion of conflict, emphasising that both players contribute in different ways and serve distinct tactical purposes within the team structure.

Miraz has highlighted that the pair share a long playing history, including featuring together during the 2019 World Cup campaign. He stressed that their relationship remains professional and cooperative, and that team success takes precedence over individual considerations. According to him, Mosaddek’s return strengthens the squad by adding depth rather than creating selection complications.

While both players are classified as all-rounders, their skill sets differ significantly. Mosaddek is primarily a batting-oriented all-rounder who operates in the middle order, offering useful off-spin as a secondary option. Miraz, by contrast, is more bowling-focused, often leading the spin attack while also contributing valuable runs in the lower middle order. Their complementary profiles mean they have, at times, featured together in over 27 One Day Internationals.

Mosaddek’s recall is largely attributed to his outstanding domestic form. In the most recent Dhaka Premier League season, he demonstrated remarkable consistency with the bat while also making regular breakthroughs with the ball, strengthening his case for international selection.

As Bangladesh prepare to face Australia in a three-match ODI series beginning in Mirpur tomorrow, attention will turn to whether Mosaddek can translate his domestic resurgence into international impact. His return not only adds depth to the squad but also introduces fresh tactical possibilities for the management as they reassess their all-rounder combinations.
