A harrowing incident in Bhola has left residents shocked after a mother was allegedly drugged and her three-month-old baby abducted, prompting an extensive police operation. Authorities later recovered the child in Dhaka, with preliminary investigations suggesting the incident may have been premeditated. The mother is currently in police custody for questioning.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in a village within Bhola Sadar Upazila. According to family members, the mother had gone to a local pharmacy to collect some medicines when a woman, wearing a burqa, offered her a 200-taka note. Family members suspect the note was laced with a narcotic substance. Moments after accepting it, the mother lost consciousness, providing the woman the opportunity to snatch the infant and flee the scene.
Local residents quickly intervened, rescuing the mother and rushing her to Bhola 250-Bed General Hospital, where she received treatment.
Police responded immediately, conducting an on-site investigation and initiating a citywide search for the abducted child. Additional Police Superintendent (Sadar Circle) Md. Ibrahim confirmed that authorities made every effort to recover the infant. Information suggested the suspect was travelling to Dhaka via a launch, bound for Sadarghat. Acting on the tip-off, Sub-Inspector Tajib Islam and Assistant Sub-Inspector Md. Limon from the Ilisha Police Investigation Centre drove to Dhaka to intercept the suspect. Their efforts culminated in a successful raid on the ‘Doyel Pakhi-10’ launch at Sadarghat, where the child was safely recovered along with the suspected abductor.
Preliminary investigations indicate the woman has three children of her own. Police suspect that due to familial disputes, she had handed the infant to a relative, whose daughter is childless and reportedly keen to take the child. Authorities are now examining the possibility that the abduction may have been staged.
