Zara Larson to Headline Yale’s Spring Fling Festival

For the first time in eight years, Yale University has announced a female artist as the headline performer for its annual Spring Fling festival. Swedish pop sensation Zara Larsson, a Grammy-nominated singer with over 61 million monthly streams on Spotify, will take to the “Old Campus” stage on 25 April. She will be preceded by British singer-songwriter Aluna and American rapper Sheck Wes, best known for his 2018 hit single Mo Bamba.

Matt Felix ’27, Talent Chair of the Spring Fling Committee, explained, “Our goal was to curate a lineup that reflects the diverse musical tastes of Yale’s student body. Each year we conduct a survey, and pop music consistently tops the list. We are thrilled to meet that expectation this year.”

Last year’s headliner, NLE Choppa, withdrew from the festival just two weeks before the event due to personal health issues. Ken Carson was selected as his replacement.

Aluna, formerly of the duo AlunaGeorge, has collaborated with KAYTRANADA, Chris Lake, and Diplo, and in 2023 founded a record label highlighting Black, female, and LGBTQ artists. Sheck Wes, who will perform after her, has worked with artists including J. Cole, Travis Scott, and Don Toliver.

The committee expressed particular pride in securing Larsson for the headline slot. Lela Shapiro ’27, Chair of Hospitality and Operations, said, “She is a major pop voice, and her stage presence and connection with fans are extraordinary.” Sophie Petz ’28, Creative and Marketing Chair, added, “Our Spring Fling promotion is about creating a full dance and party atmosphere, not just spotlighting one artist.”

Ahead of the festival, winners of the annual Battle of the Bands will open the stage. Student bands will perform on 11 April, with the audience deciding which band will kick off the festival.

Organisers select headliners based on cultural relevance, listener reach, and the quality of their live performances. Contingency plans are in place for inclement weather to ensure the festival continues uninterrupted.
