Mymensingh Jail Error Releases Three Inmates

In a startling administrative mishap, three men accused in a murder case were mistakenly released from Mymensingh Central Jail on Tuesday, prompting swift action by the Department of Prisons. The incident has led to the temporary suspension of a deputy jailer and the formation of a three-member investigative committee.

The individuals released in error are:

  • Anis Mia

  • Rashedul

  • Md. Zakirul

All three were implicated in a murder case filed in the Tarakanda Upazila. According to prison sources, the men were inadvertently freed without bail in the late afternoon of Tuesday, though news of the release only became public on Thursday.

Following the incident, Deputy Jailer Zakaria Imtiaz was placed on temporary suspension pending investigation. Meanwhile, the Department of Prisons constituted a three-member committee headed by Tipu Sultan, DIG Prisons, Dhaka Division-2, to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the release. The committee has been instructed to submit its report within three working days.

Mymensingh Senior Jail Superintendent Aminul Islam confirmed the incident, stating, “A prison officer inadvertently authorised the release of the inmates. This was entirely unintentional and the matter is being addressed immediately.”

Prison authorities explained that the error arose from a misunderstanding of the production warrant, or “hajira porwana,” which was mistakenly treated as a bail order. DIG Prisons, Mymensingh Division, Mohammad Tauhidul Islam elaborated: “The deputy jailer’s oversight led to this error. The investigative committee is working to uncover the root cause, and any officials found responsible will face appropriate disciplinary measures.”

The committee is expected to scrutinise the jail’s internal procedures, including the handling of warrants and production orders, to prevent similar mistakes in the future. Officials emphasised that the release highlights vulnerabilities in procedural adherence, underscoring the need for stringent checks and administrative diligence.

While the inmates have now been located and taken back into custody, the incident has sparked broader concern regarding operational oversight within correctional facilities. Experts suggest that comprehensive staff training and systematic auditing of warrant procedures are essential to maintaining the integrity of the justice system.

This episode serves as a stark reminder of how minor lapses in administrative vigilance can have serious legal and social consequences, reinforcing the critical role of accountability in prison management.
