NBR Secretary Tarek Hasan’s Assets Seized

Dhaka: The High Court has ordered the seizure of properties and the freezing of bank accounts belonging to Tarek Hasan, Additional Commissioner and First Secretary of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), while simultaneously imposing a travel ban to prevent him from leaving the country.

The directive was issued on Thursday by Senior Special Judge Sabbir Foyez of the Dhaka Metropolitan Court, acting on applications filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), locally known as the Durniti Domon Commission (DUDC).

The court order covers a range of assets, including a 1,998-square-foot flat in the South Khan area of Dhaka and a 15-decimal plot of land in Chandpur. In addition, two bank accounts, three fixed deposits (FDRs), three Beneficiary Owner (BO) accounts, and four life insurance policies have been frozen under the ruling.

On behalf of the ACC, Deputy Director Al Amin submitted two applications to the court: one requesting the seizure and freezing of Hasan’s assets and accounts, and the other seeking to restrict his international travel.

The applications reveal that an ongoing investigation is scrutinising Hasan’s declared and undeclared assets. According to the ACC, Tarek Hasan holds two registered immovable properties, two bank accounts, three FDRs, three BO accounts, four life insurance policies, and other miscellaneous assets. The combined estimated value of these holdings is reported to be BDT 2,98,04,728 (approximately 2.98 crore taka).

The ACC further claimed that confidential sources indicated Hasan may be attempting to transfer assets to other locations, which could jeopardise the investigation. The court was informed that immediate seizure and freezing of both immovable and movable properties is essential to safeguard the ongoing inquiry. The ACC also argued that there is a risk he could leave the country to avoid legal scrutiny, prompting the court to impose a travel ban.

A detailed breakdown of the seized and frozen assets is as follows:
