New Indian HC calls on Momen, Pranay K. Verma, the recently appointed Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, paid his first visit to Dr. AK Abdul Momen, the foreign minister, today at the foreign ministry. According to a press release from the foreign ministry, Momen welcomed the new envoy and stated that Bangladesh views India as its closest and most significant neighbor, calling the relationship “Solid and Unique.”

The foreign minister said that both countries are inextricably linked by historical, cultural, social and economic ties and over the last 50 years, the Dhaka-Delhi relationship has reached an unprecedented height under the visionary leadership of the prime ministers of both countries. He also recalled the crucial role played by the people and Government of India during the Great War of Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971 led by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Referring to the Bangladesh’s exemplary economic growth under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s dynamic leadership, Momen said that Dhaka’s economic development is complementing the economic development of India in many ways.
He also said that Bangladesh is positioned to be a “Regional Connectivity Hub” and India being the closest neighbour can reap the benefit of the connectivity outlook, as envisioned by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Dr Momen also mentioned about the actions taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government for exerting “zero tolerance” towards terrorism, radicalism and insurgency, which ultimately paved the way in establishing peace and stability of the North Eastern States of India.
He urged all concerned to work towards bringing the border killings to zero. Regarding to the Indo-Pacific region, Momen stressed upon the need for international rules and norms based free and fair connectivity amongst the countries of the region. The Indian envoy said with overwhelms that he is being received with heartfelt warmth in Bangladesh, wherever he is visiting.
Terming working in Bangladesh as a matter of honour and privilege, he reiterated his commitment to work on the issues of mutual interest for further strengthening the excellent relations existing between the two countries. Under the India’s Presidency of G20, he said, India expects active participation of Bangladesh in the G20 meetings to promote the issues of mutual interest in the global discourse.
The high commissioner emphasized the need for cooperation in the global sphere to support the candidacies put out by each nation. They focused on fostering closer ties between Bangladesh and the Indian North Eastern Region in order to revitalize the connections and long-standing friendship. Dr. Momen requested India’s assistance in facilitating the swift return of the forcibly displaced Rohingya to Myanmar. The high commissioner responded by saying that India is also eager to find a workable solution to the crisis and will keep pushing to ensure the swift, secure, long-term, and respectable return of Rohingyas to Myanmar.
