Oil Prices Plummet Following Trump’s Decision to Halt Iran Strikes

Global crude oil prices dropped sharply by more than four dollars per barrel after US President Donald Trump announced the cancellation of planned military strikes against Iran, citing progress towards a potential diplomatic agreement.

According to market data, Brent crude fell by $4.08, or 4.64 per cent, to settle at $83.85 per barrel. Simultaneously, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude saw a decline of $4.01, or 4.74 per cent, sliding to $80.66 per barrel. The sudden decrease follows weeks of heightened geopolitical volatility, during which oil benchmark prices had surged by over 20 per cent after the US resumed targeted actions against Iran and Iranian forces engaged in retaliatory strikes against oil tankers operating off the coast of Oman.

The retreat in prices came directly after President Trump posted an update on his social media platform, Truth Social, detailing his administration’s decision to pause military engagement. Trump asserted that the United States had been fully prepared to deploy military force against Tehran on a scale unmatched since the Second World War. However, he stated that the decision to stand down was taken after direct appeals from Iran and several Middle Eastern nations, who pointed to significant headway made regarding the foundational framework of a proposed peace agreement.

Under the outline of the prospective deal, the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial maritime corridor for global oil supply—must remain entirely open and unobstructed. Furthermore, the framework mandates the complete cessation of Iran’s nuclear threats. Expressing optimism over the diplomatic route, Trump noted that he agreed to halt the offensive in the interest of global stability and the future prosperity of Iran, provided a comprehensive treaty is finalized swiftly.

Market analysts note that the Strait of Hormuz handles approximately one-fifth of the world’s petroleum consumption, making crude pricing exceptionally sensitive to military developments in the region. While the immediate threat of conflict has receded, energy markets remain watchful, with investors monitoring whether formal negotiations between Washington and Tehran will successfully lead to a durable accord.
