A tragic road accident on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Cumilla’s Chauddagram upazila claimed the life of a bus supervisor in the early hours of Friday (19 June), following a collision between two passenger buses triggered by a risky overtaking manoeuvre.
The incident occurred around 4:30 am in the Hari Sardar area, a stretch of highway widely regarded by locals as accident-prone, particularly during the late-night and pre-dawn hours when visibility is low and driver fatigue is common.
The deceased was identified as Md Alমগীর Hossain (50), a bus supervisor employed with Shyamoli N R Travels. He hailed from Rajanarayanpur village under Aminpur police station in Pabna district and was the son of the late Abdul Karim Mridha.
According to highway police, the collision took place when a Dhaka-bound Shyamoli N R Travels bus approached the area and encountered another passenger bus ahead that suddenly attempted to pull over to the left side of the road without proper signalling. As a result, the trailing bus lost control while attempting to avoid impact and struck the vehicle in front with significant force.
The impact of the crash left the supervisor critically injured. He died at the scene before receiving any medical assistance. Passengers on both buses, however, escaped with minor injuries, though the sudden collision triggered panic and confusion among travellers in the dark early morning hours.
Police and local residents quickly rushed to the scene following the incident. Traffic movement on the highway was briefly disrupted as authorities worked to clear the damaged vehicles and restore normal flow. Both buses were later seized for inspection, and legal procedures were initiated.
A case of unnatural death is currently being processed, confirmed officials from the Miyabazar Highway Police Station, who are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the reckless driving and failure to follow basic road safety protocols.
