Pabna Businessman Brutally Assaulted Following Refusal to Pay Extortion

A local businessman in Bera, Pabna, has sustained severe, life-threatening injuries after allegedly being abducted and brutally assaulted by a regional Shromik Dal leader and his associates over a refused extortion demand of 300,000 taka (£1,950). The victim, identified as 40-year-old Mijanur Rahman, suffered a fractured hand and leg during the sustained assault, which took place on Tuesday afternoon. Following a tense rescue operation, Rahman was admitted to Pabna General Hospital in a critical condition later that evening. A formal criminal case was registered with the Bera Model Police Station on Wednesday morning.

Rahman, the son of Monjel Khan, is a well-known resident of Ward 8 within the Bera Municipality, where he operates local hotel and transport businesses. The primary accused, 35-year-old Ripon Sordar, serves as the organisational secretary of the Santhia Upazila branch of the Shromik Dal—the influential labour wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Sordar is the son of Pasha Sordar, hailing from the nearby Koromja Sordarpara village in Santhia.

Abduction and Torture at Merchant Association Office

According to formal case documents and local sources, the animosity began when Rahman and his brother, Golam Mostafa, began constructing a modern market complex near the bustling C&B bus stand area in Bera Municipality. On 19 June, Sordar reportedly arrived at the construction site alongside a large entourage, demanding an immediate payment of 300,000 taka from the brothers. He allegedly threatened the businessmen with death if the sum was not delivered within a strict three-day deadline.

When the brothers steadfastly refused to comply with the extortion demand, the situation escalated dramatically. At approximately 10:30 am on Tuesday, Sordar and his accomplices arrived at the construction scene on motorcycles and forcefully abducted Rahman in broad daylight. He was transported across sub-district lines to neighboring Santhia Upazila, where he was kept confined inside the private office of Mohorom Sordar, the president of the Koromja Bazar Merchant Association.

The victim’s family alleged that Rahman was subjected to hours of inhumane torture inside the merchant association office. The attackers repeatedly struck him with iron rods and heavy metal pipes, targeting his limbs until his hand and leg were broken. Severely injured and covered in blood, he was eventually rescued by relatives and local residents, who rushed him to the Bera Upazila Health Complex. As his physical state deteriorated rapidly due to internal bleeding and trauma, doctors transferred him to Pabna General Hospital for emergency specialist surgery. Following the rescue, his brother filed a detailed written complaint naming Sordar and several unidentified accomplices as the primary defendants.

History of Extortion and Military Intervention

This is not the first time the family has faced targeted threats from this specific regional syndicate. Rahman’s family revealed that shortly after the major political transition in Bangladesh on 5 August 2024, a criminal network led by Sordar and Mohorom Sordar had attempted to levy a substantial sum of protection money from their commercial operations. Left with no local alternative, the family sought urgent assistance from the Bangladesh Army, who had been deployed to maintain regional law and order.

Military personnel subsequently summoned the accused individuals to a local camp and forced them to sign a binding written undertaking. The document explicitly stated that the signatories would bear full legal and personal responsibility for any future harassment, financial demands, or untoward incidents involving the family. Whilst the situation remained stable for several months following the military intervention, local traders report that the syndicate recently renewed their extortion attempts as local political dynamics shifted, culminating in Tuesday’s violent assault.

Sordar has strongly denied the extortion and abduction allegations, claiming that the family’s previous complaints to the military were found to be completely groundless. He instead leveled counter-accusations against the brothers, claiming that the businessmen were continuing to behave like affiliates of the ousted Awami League regime to avoid local trade regulations. He did, however, partially admit to the physical violence, stating that his supporters had merely given the businessman “one or two blows” during a heated argument over local trade disputes.

Nayan Kumar Sarker, the Officer-in-Charge of Bera Model Police Station, confirmed that a regular criminal case regarding the assault on Rahman was registered on Wednesday. Police authorities have already initiated a thorough forensic and investigative enquiry into the matter. Sarker assured the public that strict legal action will be taken against the perpetrators as soon as the initial enquiry concludes, promising an increased police presence around local marketplaces to deter similar protection rackets.
