Pagla Mosque Donation Boxes Yield Nearly Tk 120 Million Once Again

The historic Pagla Mosque in Kishoreganj has once again witnessed an extraordinary outpouring of public generosity, as nearly Tk 120 million was recovered from its donation boxes during the latest count. Alongside the vast sum of cash, a significant quantity of foreign currency and gold ornaments was also discovered, reaffirming the mosque’s unique position as a symbol of faith, trust, and charity in Bangladesh.

The announcement was made at around 7:45 pm by Md Ershadul Ahmed, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kishoreganj and convenor of the donation box opening committee. The counting process began early on Saturday morning at 7:00 am, when authorities opened 13 iron chests placed within the mosque premises. A total of 35 sacks filled with cash were collected, along with various items of gold jewellery and foreign currencies. After nearly twelve hours of meticulous counting, the final total stood at Tk 117,848,538.

According to the Pagla Mosque Management Committee, this year’s donation boxes were opened after a comparatively shorter interval of three months and 27 days. In contrast, the previous opening on 30 August—after a gap of four months and 18 days—had yielded Tk 120,937,220 from 32 sacks, in addition to foreign currencies, gold ornaments, and diamonds. Despite the shorter duration, the latest collection has once again reached an exceptional figure, highlighting the unwavering faith of devotees.

The entire process was conducted under strict supervision. Officials from the Kishoreganj district administration, police authorities, and mosque management committee were present from the outset. Initially, cash was removed from the iron chests and placed into sacks before being spread across the floor for systematic counting. The operation was overseen by District Commissioner and Mosque Committee President Mohammad Aslam Mollah, along with Superintendent of Police SM Farhad Hossain.

Several senior officials, including Additional District Commissioners Mizabe Rahmat and Mohammad Nahid Hasan Khan, were also present. The counting operation involved nearly 500 individuals, including around 100 staff members from Rupali Bank, approximately 350 students from two madrasas—Al Jamiatul Imdadiya and the Pagla Mosque Orphanage—along with mosque committee members and law enforcement personnel.

District Commissioner Mohammad Aslam Mollah stated that after meeting the daily operational expenses of the mosque and its Islamic complex, the remaining funds are deposited in banks. At present, the mosque’s bank balance exceeds Tk 104 crore, with an additional Tk 1.2 million received through online donations. The foreign currencies and gold ornaments are securely stored in the district treasury and will be auctioned at an appropriate time, with proceeds added to the central fund.

The funds are regularly used to support mosques, madrasas, and orphanages across the district, as well as to provide medical assistance to the poor and critically ill and to finance various social welfare initiatives.

Superintendent of Police SM Farhad Hossain confirmed that stringent security measures were maintained throughout the process—from opening the donation boxes to counting and depositing the money.

Situated on the banks of the Narasunda River in Harua, west of Kishoreganj town, Pagla Mosque is not merely a place of worship but a profound testament to communal faith. People from across the country, regardless of religion or background, continue to donate here, believing their offerings will serve humanity.
