Pickup Crash Claims Trader’s Life

A fatal road accident in Faridpur has left one trader dead and another man seriously injured after a watermelon-laden pickup van veered off the road and collided violently with a roadside tree in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased, identified as Yusuf Ali Sheikh, 46, is believed to have been travelling with a consignment of watermelons destined for Khan Khanapur in Rajbari. The incident occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m. in the Chandipur এলাকায় along the Faridpur–Rajbari highway, a stretch known for relatively light traffic during the early morning hours.

According to local residents and police sources, the pickup had departed from Faridpur and was heading towards its destination when the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle. The exact cause of the loss of control remains unclear; however, the vehicle reportedly swerved off the carriageway before crashing into a tree at considerable speed. The impact was severe, causing catastrophic damage to the front of the vehicle.

Yusuf Ali Sheikh succumbed to his injuries at the scene, with witnesses describing the collision as “extremely forceful.” Another passenger, Atiar Sheikh, sustained serious injuries and was quickly rescued by locals. He was transported to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where he remains under close medical supervision. Hospital authorities have not yet disclosed detailed information about his condition, though it is understood to be critical.

In a development that has complicated the investigation, the driver of the pickup fled the scene immediately after the crash. Law enforcement agencies have since launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend the individual. Police officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to determine whether negligence, excessive speed, mechanical failure, or driver fatigue played a role in the incident.

Officer-in-Charge Salahuddin Chowdhury of Karimpur Highway Police Station stated that officers responded promptly after receiving reports of the crash. They secured the area, ensured the restoration of normal traffic flow, and initiated formal investigative procedures. The body of the deceased has been sent to the morgue at Faridpur Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
