Police Seize Foreign Liquor Hidden In Fodder Sacks

The police in Nakla, situated within the Sherpur district, have successfully intercepted a significant consignment of illicit foreign liquor. During a targeted operation conducted on Monday, 11 May, law enforcement officers recovered 108 bottles of foreign-manufactured alcohol. The contraband was found meticulously concealed within sacks of bran (fodder) being transported on a pickup truck. In connection with this discovery, three individuals alleged to be involved in the narcotics trade were apprehended at the scene.

The operation reached its climax at approximately 4:00 pm at the Goregaon intersection within the Nakla municipal area. The intervention followed a period of intelligence gathering, with officers acting on a specific tip-off regarding the movement of smuggled goods from the border regions toward the national capital.

Details of the Apprehension

Following the interception of the vehicle, the police took three men into custody. The individuals have been identified as:

  • Mohammad Ruhul Amin, aged 37, son of Abul Kashem, residing in Karua village within the Sreebardi Upazila.

  • Mohammad Nur Mohammad, aged 28, son of Abed Ali, hailing from the Jhenaigati Upazila.

  • Shafiqul Islam, aged 19, son of Billal Hossain, also from Karua village in Sreebardi.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nakla Police Station, Ripon Chandra Gope, provided details regarding the logistics of the smuggling attempt. According to the OC, the consignment originated from the border areas of Nalitabari Upazila in Sherpur. The suspects had allegedly planned to transport the 108 bottles of foreign liquor to Dhaka, using the fodder sacks as a ruse to evade detection during transit. Upon receiving the intelligence, a police team took up positions at the Goregaon intersection to monitor the route. When the designated pickup truck arrived, officers signalled it to stop and initiated a thorough search of the cargo, which led to the discovery of the hidden bottles.

Administrative Response and Legal Action

In addition to the narcotics and the suspects, the police have seized the pickup truck used in the commission of the crime. The vehicle is currently being held in the custody of Nakla Police Station as material evidence for the upcoming legal proceedings.

Nasrin Jahan, the Assistant Superintendent of Police (Police Circle) for Sherpur district, visited the site of the seizure to oversee the initial investigation. She reiterated the district administration’s uncompromising stance on the illegal trade of narcotics. “The Sherpur district police administration has declared a policy of maximum strictness regarding drug control. Our specialised teams are working continuously to disrupt these networks,” she stated during her visit.

The authorities have confirmed that the process of filing a formal case against the three detainees is currently underway. The charges will be brought under the Narcotics Control Act, and the suspects will be produced before the court following the completion of preliminary documentation at the Nakla Police Station.

This seizure is part of a broader, ongoing effort by law enforcement in the border districts to curb the influx of foreign liquor and other prohibited substances. Border areas like Nalitabari are frequently monitored due to their geographical proximity to international boundaries, which can often be exploited for the smuggling of consumer goods and narcotics. The Nakla police have indicated that they will continue to heighten their vigilance at key transit points to prevent the use of public transport and commercial vehicles for the distribution of illicit materials. The successful interception at Goregaon is viewed by the local administration as a significant result of improved intelligence-led policing in the region.
