For the first time, the Election Commission (EC) has completely banned the use of posters in election campaigns. Strict restrictions have also been imposed on drone usage and campaigning from abroad.
On Monday night (11 November), the EC published the new regulations in the official gazette. The regulations have been formulated in line with the recommendations of the Election System Reform Commission and the 2008 code of conduct.
Under the new rules, poster use in campaigns is completely prohibited to prevent environmental pollution and control expenses. Additionally, no candidate may use more than 20 billboards, banners, or festoons.
The EC stated, “Drone usage and foreign-based campaigning are completely prohibited.” Strict controls have also been imposed on social media. Using artificial intelligence (AI) for campaigning with dishonest intentions is entirely banned.
From now on, candidates must submit a pledge to adhere to the code of conduct to the EC. For the first time, all candidates are required to announce their election manifestos on the same stage.
Strict penalties have been set for violations. Any candidate who breaches the code of conduct may face up to six months in prison and a fine of Tk 150,000. Political parties may also be fined the same amount. In cases of serious violations, the EC has the authority to cancel a candidate’s nomination.
