As the 13th National Parliamentary elections approach in Nilphamari-1 (Domar-Dimla) constituency, allegations have emerged of attacks and arson targeting minority households. Local residents claim that these acts were carried out by leaders and activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, reportedly in connection with election-related disputes. A video of the incident has rapidly circulated on social media, drawing widespread concern.
The footage shows a private vehicle belonging to the younger brother of BNP candidate Maulana Manjurul Islam Afendi stranded by the roadside. While repairs were being undertaken, a group of motorcyclists affiliated with Jamaat reportedly arrived and instigated a violent confrontation. When members of the local minority community intervened, the attackers reportedly turned on them and set fire to several nearby homes.
Local witnesses expressed their shock and fear. One resident said, “Afendi’s younger brother did not even come here to campaign, yet this happened. They set fire to our homes. If they win, what more could Jamaat do?” Another resident added, “Minorities have the right to vote freely. But Jamaat seems intent on curtailing our electoral freedom.”
In response, Domar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md. Rawshan Kabir arrived at the scene along with police and Border Guard Bangladesh personnel, instructing both sides to maintain calm.
According to local sources, at least five houses were damaged and several individuals were injured. Community leaders have requested further administrative support to prevent escalation and ensure the safety of residents.
The following table summarises the reported impact of the attacks:
| Location | Houses Damaged | Injured Individuals | Alleged Cause |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domar, Nilphamari-1 | 5 | 3 | Election dispute; intimidation of minorities |
| Dimla, Nilphamari-1 | 2 | 1 | Conflict over voter support |
Residents have voiced concerns that these attacks are not merely acts of retribution but are intended to intimidate minority voters and undermine their electoral freedom. Appeals have been made to both authorities and civil society for intervention and protection.
Political circles and human rights organisations have also expressed alarm, emphasising the need to safeguard citizens’ voting rights. The urgency of maintaining law and order and preventing election-related violence has become a pressing issue in the constituency.
